HEADS UP TO THINNING HAIR - National Thinning Hair Awareness Month 2008!

If you’ve ever felt isolated and embarrassed by thinning hair you’re not alone. A staggering one in three women and one in two men will suffer from thinning hair at some point in their lives with poor diet, smoking, stress, pregnancy, childbirth and the menopause all common causes of the condition.

For many sufferers, thinning hair leads to loss of confidence. Over half of Irish women (57%) have admitted the appearance of their hair affected their self image according to a recent poll.

That’s why thinning hair supplement specialist Viviscal, by Irish healthcare company lifes2good, is supporting National Thinning Hair Awareness Month, which takes place throughout June and aims to both raise awareness of the issue and provide sufferers with comprehensive advice and support to manage their thinning hair. Backed by TV personalities Jennie Bond and Cheryl Baker, who have personally suffered from thinning hair, National Thinning Hair Awareness Month is also supported by a new consumer guide entitled ‘Heads Up’.

Launched in association with industry experts Dr Deborah McManners (GP), Terry Calvert (Award-winning Hair Stylist) and Vetta Thompson, (International Trichologist), the new consumer guide will help sufferers to understand the different types of thinning hair and their causes, how to recover from thinning hair as well as nutrition advice and styling tips to encourage healthy looking hair.

“Thinning hair is much more common that many people think,” said Dr Deborah McManners, GP, naturopath and medical author. “While people often lose their hair with age, thinning hair in younger people can be a barometer of their general health. The new consumer guide aims to help sufferers identify their thinning hair, understand it and take steps to manage it.”

Jennie Bond says: “Thinning hair became a problem for me as I began to get older. I started noticing a bit of thinness along my parting but it was more recently when I had a fringe cut it really began to show. My mother commented on my hair looking thin at the front and then my daughter in typical teenage-style remarked that I was going bald.

“It made me feel much more self conscious about my appearance and getting the right information about thinning hair was very reassuring to me. That’s why I think Thinning Hair Awareness Month is so important. The more that thinning hair is brought out in to the open, the less embarrassing it will be to admit to it and the easier it will be for people to find solutions.”
