Intermezzo Magazine – A Refreshing Angle on Food, Wine & Travel

Recently, Ireland saw the introduction of exciting new quality food, wine and travel magazine ‘Intermezzo’. Published by Beehive Media and with the editorial consulting of accomplished writer, Ernie Whalley, this quarterly publication, promises to serve up the most mouth watering information for connoisseurs and lovers of food and wine along with a world of food destinations for its readers.

Ernie Whalley, formerly editor of Food & Wine Magazine is currently Ireland's most widely read wine writer with a weekly column in the Sunday Independent. Activities on the food front include his appointment as a jury member of the Wolf Blass World Food & Drink Media Awards. The eclectic team of contributors includes Martin Moran, a Master of Wine since 1994 and short listed for a Glenfiddich Award this year; John McKenna, one of the most significant players in Ireland's gastro revolution, co-author of The Bridgestone Guides and winner of four Glenfiddich Awards; and Caroline Hennessy who will review events, ingredients, products and food, wine and travel books. Intermezzo will also include features written in conjunction with Ruth Hegarty from Eurotoques, Europe’s leading chefs' organization.

Publisher Kevin McParland (Beehive Media) said “I am delighted with our first issue of Intermezzo as it has such a variety and depth of content both from home and abroad. I believe that Irish people are international travellers, wanting to experience new tastes and cultures. Intermezzo will give its readers unsurpassed quality of writing and design with breath-taking photography. All of our articles are well-researched and fact-checked which ensures that what our readers are digesting is true knowledge of food, wine and travel. Our next step is to provide readers of our February issue with a fully comprehensive Wine Magazine along with some other tasty surprises”, Kevin continued.

The first issue of Intermezzo Magazine includes many delightful treats including; a visit to Ireland’s Gourmet Capital, Kinsale by Ernie Whalley. Great Chefs Darina Allen, Kevin Thornton and Lorcan Cribbin are profiled and share their favourite recipes. Martin Moran shares his experiences of Bergerac wines in ‘The Wine Life’, whilst John McKenna tells us about Irish roots and Irish innovation in a 'Tour of Ireland's Bread Basket' which includes a mouthwatering recipe for the traditional moist crumbly brown soda, a favourite of every bread lover.

Also featured in Intermezzo’s first edition is a report on everyone’s trip of a lifetime - Four days on the Orient Express. ‘A Taste of Sardinia’, describes life in the slow lane, telling readers where to go, what to eat and drink when visiting the island. The life cycle of one of nature’s most fragrant pearls, garlic, is also explored.

At the Intermezzo launch held at five star restaurant, Thorntons, Ernie said, “When Kevin (McParland) asked me to be involved with the magazine, I was delighted. I was already familiar with Intermezzo, a huge success in America, and impressed by the quality of the writing, the lovely photography and the high production values, I didn't need much convincing! It will also be great to have access to Roseanne Tully’s (Founding Publisher and Editorial Director of Intermezzo USA) experience and to their talented designers.

“The core writing team we've assembled here is fabulous. It's great to be once more associated with Martin Moran; Caroline Hennessy, John McKenna and Tomas Clancy. I'm also pleased that Eurotoques are going to be featuring. Over the years I've built up a good relationship with them and there's a huge respect both ways helped by the fact that, unlike most journalists, I've actually worked in the business. Modern Irish chefs are among the most talented in the world and Intermezzo will be the perfect showcase for their skills. All in all, Irish food and drink lovers can look forward to a hugely stylish, authoritative and enjoyable magazine. With the birth of Intermezzo they are in for a treat!" he continued.
